Teen Recovery Coaching

Why you’re more likely to develop an eating disorder

You, more than anyone else, are more likely to develop an eating disorder because, let’s face it, technology is probably a huge part of your everyday life. You see people everyday on TikTok, Instagram, and all over. The problem with this is that there is a sense of false perfection as influencers tend to only show their “highlight reels”. I promise you that just because they look perfect, doesn’t mean their life is.

Teenagers, like yourself, have even more pressure to look like or resemble celebrities as they’re watched and seen more than ever before. The editing of photos in advertising, magazines, online clothing stores, and more create unrealistic standards for you as you grow and develop into your own identity.

But it doesn’t have to be like this.

You are growing and you are becoming the person you want to be. I know first hand how societal pressures of an unachievable perfection can be so harmful. Not to mention, unidentified trauma in your teenage years is also a large contributor to the development of eating disorders.

You may feel like you aren’t enough, that something is “wrong” with you. You may be confused about who you are or what you really want out of your life. And that’s okay. You don’t have to have it all figured out. With connection and support, we can do this together.

Let’s get started.

How I help you…

First, you must know that you’re not alone in this. I’ve gone through many variations of my own eating disorders and I know where you’re coming from.

Together we build a solid foundation for what’s healthy for you.

We go over the following aspects so that I can help you

  • Eat without guilt

  • Eat for pleasure

  • Exercise for pleasure and health rather than to burn calories

  • Trust your true self and your body to know what it needs

  • Discover who you are outside of weight loss

You are much more than your eating disorder.

I want to know who she is.

Monthly Check-Ins

Each month we will have a 30 minute check in to discuss any concerns and catch up on what is happening. It is very important to me that we are all on the same page and are all showing up in the best way that we can. It can be challenging to know what to say or how to be the most supportive with a teenager. I am here to help you with that!

Social Media Briefing

Being 30, I have been around for most of the latest social media frenzies. I know how harmful (or possibly helpful) it can be to be able to find anyone and anything on the internet. There are so many harmful diet culture messages being spread across these platforms, it is important that we are all aware of these triggers.

Team Collaboration

I am able to connect with the rest of the recovery team whether that be a physician, a therapist, a dietician, a coach or a teacher, etc. If all of the team is on the same page and all goals are aligning, there is a much better chance for success.

Communication

Just like with the client, I am open to consistent communication with you via text/email regarding concerns and or questions throughout the process.

“I met Shelbye when I was really struggling with my eating disorder. I really loved working with Shelbye for so many reasons. One of the main reasons is because she has actually been through an ED herself so she understands so much more than someone who only knows about this professionally and has never actually experienced it. During quarantine, when we didn’t have much to talk about, she put together a one-on-one stretch/yoga class for me because I really needed to stretch out as it helped reduce my anxiety. Shelbye was always there for me and she always knew the right thing to say. Thank you Shelbye!”
